An incomplete odontocete (Mammalia, Cetacea) skull from Middle Miocene Miste Bed (near Winterswijk in the eastern part of The Netherlands) is described as Vanbreenia trigonia, a new genus and species. The skull exhibits a short rostrum with only two maxillary teeth for each toothrow and with narrow and toothless apical portion exclusively formed by the premaxilla. Considering this last character, the specimen could belong to the Eurhinodelphinidae even if a certain attribution is not possible because of the incompleteness of the specimen. Vanbreenia n. gen. could represent a specialized adaptation to bottom suction feeding among the eurhinodelphinids. |

From July 2001 to June 2002, we recorded a total of 2h55min of Tucuxi Dolphin Sotalia fluviatilis vocalizations from Sepetiba Bay, Brazil (22º35'S-44º03'W). A total of 3350 whistles were analyzed quantitative and qualitatively and were divided into 124 types, by visual inspection of sonograms. The following parameters were measured: Initial Frequency, Final Frequency, Minimum Frequency, Maximum Frequency, Duration, Number of Inflections, Frequency at the Inflection Points, Frequency at 1/2, 1/4, and 3/4 of whistle duration, Presence of Frequency Modulation and Harmonics. Ascending type whistles (N=2719) were most common, representing 82% of the total. Dolphin behavior and average group size observed during recording influenced the whistle's quantitative... |

Samples of milk from a Bryde's whale and a Sei whale contained 2.7 g/100 mL and 1.7 g/100 mL of hexose, respectively. Both contained lactose as the dominant saccharide along with small amounts of Neu5Ac(alpha 2-3)Gal(beta 1-4)Glc(3'-N-acetylneuraminyllactose), Neu5Ac(alpha 2-6)Gal(beta 1-4) Glc(6-N- acetylneuraminyllactose) and Neu5Ac(alpha 2-6)Gal(beta 1-4)GlcNAc(beta 1-3)Gal(beta 1-4)Glc (LST c). The dominance of lactose in the carbohydrate of these milks is similar to that of Minke whale milk and bottlenose dolphin colostrum, but the oligosaccharide patterns are different from those of these two species, illustrating the heterogeneity of milk oligosaccharides among the Cetacea. This study of the Harbour Porpoise Phocoena phocoena (Linnaeus, 1758) has been undertaken in order to find out whether differences in size and growth rate between the skulls of males and females could be demonstrated. Stuart & Morejohn (1980) have established this phenomenon in the population of the north-eastern Pacific. The material on which this study is based, consists of 76 skulls present in the collection of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (RMNH), Leiden. They all belong to specimens stranded on the Dutch coast. In order to determine the age, of all these specimens the number of dentinal growth layer groups (GLG) in the teeth was counted. Thereupon 32 cranial characters were measured of each skull; these measurements were plotted against... |

Along ten years of study of a common dolphin from the brazilian coast, Sotalia brasiliensis Van Beneden, 1874, I could see some occasions of feeding associations of this dolphin with five species of birds, Sula leucogaster (Boddaert, 1783), Fregata magnificens Mathews, 1914, Sterna hirundinacea Lesson, 1831, Larus dominicanus Lichtenstein, 1823 and Phalacrocorax olivaceus Humboldt, 1895. The commonest association observed was between the dolphin and S. leucogaster, and in all the associations was characterized the commensalism, with advantaged to the birds. |

Observations of whales and dolphins in the Cape Verde Islands obtained in 1995 and 1996 are reported and data on the occurrence of 14 taxa are given, including four not previously reported from the region, viz. Bryde’s Whale Balaenoptera edeni, Killer Whale Orcinus orca, Rough-toothed Dolphin Steno bredanensis, and Striped Dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba. An earlier report of Fin Whale B. physalus is reviewed and re-identified as B. cf. borealis. Status and occurrence of the Humpback Whale Megaptera novaeangliae are discussed at some length. Unpublished observations from other observers are also included and a short account on the history of whaling in the islands is given. A list of all cetacean taxa reliably recorded in the Cape Verde region is presented... |
